Torremolinos is certainly one of the best known holiday resorts in southern Spain with thousands of visitors flocking there every year for its fine beaches and vibrant nightlife. The resort had been popular with the rich and famous during the fifties and early sixties when the likes of Sinatra and Lennon both visited there, but it later become known for a major package holiday resort. In more recent years the local authorities have invested much money into the area which has resulted in big improvements to the beach and promenade. Hundreds of palms have been planted to help bring some green areas to this lively resort.

In the middle of Torremolinos is the main shopping area of calle San Miguel which leads into the old fishing area of El Bajondillo. This sector is always popular with visitors who go there for the many good restaurants and trinket shops. A flight of stairs known locally as Cuesta del Tajo meanders its way through the El Bajondillo down to the Torremolinos beaches. Torremolinos has a long esplanade which runs passed the old fishing port of La Carihuela all the way to the nearby holiday resort of Benalmadena. La Carihuela has retained much of its original quaint character and is famed for its fine fish restaurants.

One of the largest family visitor attractions in Torremolinos is the Crocodile Park near to the bypass, which is home to the biggest crocodile in all Europe, called Big Daddy, which is about 4.5 meters long and weighs a huge 500 kilos. Children will love their visit as they have an opportunity to touch live baby crocs. This park also has informative guided tours round the enclosures, as well as the petting zoo, gift shop and cafe. Another family tourist attraction on the edge of Torremolinos is the famous Aqualand water park with flumes like the Boomerang, the Twister and the Black Hole. The highlight of the Aqualand park is the Kamikaze which is probably one of the tallest water flumes in Europe.

Torremolinos has a good reputation for its nightlife, especially among the younger generation. The El Palladium is one of the most famous of its clubs with several dance floors, music bars and even a pool to cool off when things get too hot. For a more traditional Spanish entertainment, the Taberna Pepe Lopez (Plaza de Gambre Alegre) has regular flamenco dance shows. Torremolinos also has several gay bars, most of them located around Plaza de la Nogalera. The most popular of the gay discos is Passion found on the Avenida Palma de Mallorca.

There are several Torremolinos fiestas that take place throughout the year, such as the International Tourist Day (in September) which has processions, entertainment, and free snacks of fish and paella. More free samples of fried fish are given out to the vistors during the Dia del Pescaito in June.

Torremolinos is located only 7 miles (or 12km) from Malaga. The town has a rail station in the Plaza de la Nogalera and there are services from there to Malaga centre, the airport and also Fuengirola. Portillo operate good bus and coach services from the bus station in the calle Hoya to Malaga, plus Benalmadena, Mijas and Marbella.
