Puerto Rico is located on the south west coastline of Gran Canaria Island. The town is very popular with young families and also couples, although with the numerous and steep slopes mean it is not very suitable for the older generation. Puerto Rico has two purpose built beaches, 2 marinas, many bars and good restaurants, plus sun all the year. It may get a little criticism for not being the most attractive holiday resort, but Puerto Rico has all that you need for a fun family vacation.

Puerto Rico beaches are located in a sheltered bay between 2 yacht marinas. The gentle slope of the sands, that have been imported from the African Sahara, are ideal for younger children. There are assorted bars and fine restaurants by the beach, as well as two of public pools set inside lush and tropical garden areas. Further up the coastline is the larger beach called Playa de Amadores. The fine, white sand here has been brought from the Caribbean. Two big breakwaters help protect Playa de Amadores, so it is also perfect for smaller kids. Facilities include toilets, beach bars, cafes and shops are all located nearby.

The town offers a large selection of angling trips, glass bottom pleasure cruises and catamaran trips from both marinas. There is also a regular ferry up the coast to the closeby resorts of Arguineguin and Puerto de Mogan, which is a quaint former fishing town with a smallish beach and several fine restaurants and popular bars. A favourite excursion from Puerto de Mogan is the amazing Yellow Submarine Trip that explores wrecks along the seabed. There is also a selection of water sports found in Puerto Rico, such as scuba diving, skiing, jet biking, para-gliding and windsurfing.

The Centro Civico commercial centre is the biggest of the three main shopping centres in Puerto Rico. You can find almost anything there including groceries, duty-free items, electrical goods, jewelry and womens clothing. The other two local shopping centres are the Europa and the Agua la Perra. A few kilometres from Puerto Rico is the small village of Arguineguin, which has a large local market each Tuesday. Be ready to haggle though, if you wish to locate yourself a real bargain.

Much of the Puerto Rico nightlife is found round the Centro Civico, including La Fiesta, which has family entertainment, and the fun Harleys Dancing. The towns hottest venue is the Jokers club, which usually remains open until about 6 am. There are loads more music bars near to the Europa Centre, such as the entertainment bar, the Barbacoa. Puerto Rico has an excellent selection of places to dine out, from fast food chains like McDonalds, to high class French restaurants such as Olivers near the yacht marina.

Puerto Rico Aqua Park is found on the outskirts of the town and has a good variety of childrens pools and waterchutes, plus a cafe and nursery, the water park provides an excellent day out for the entire family.

There are bus services from Puerto Rico out to Mogan, Puerto de Mogan and Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, although they can be a bit unreliable though, so try to be patient.
