Almerimar is situated roughly 24 miles (or 40km) west of Almeria, just off the main coastal autoroute. This purpose built holiday resort has over seven miles of fine beaches, a yacht marina, an quality 27 hole golf club and a selection of other useful amenities including tourist hotels, boutiques, bars and restaurants. To maintain the aesthetic appeal, all new Almerimar developments are limited in total height with green spaces incorporated.

At its centre is the 1000 plus berth Almerimar Marina, which was opened in 1978 and is one of the most significant sailing venues on the Spanish Mediterranean. There are sailing schools with lessons for novices and the more experienced crew, with all the equipment included. The clear seas are perfect for sub aqua so if you want to try this water sport you have a choice of two divingschools. Wind and kitesurfing have also gained in popularity recently plus there are a couple of riding stables in the local area. If you do not mind traveling a little further afield, the runs of the Sierra Nevada are perfect for snow skiing in the colder months.

Golf Almerimar, designed by Ron Kirby and Gary Player, was first opened 30 years ago and has recently been upgraded and increased from 18 to 27 holes. The latest irrigation systems have also been added at Almerimar Golf which is known for its tree lined generous fairways, well placed hazards, ponds and large greens. The lush fauna helps to ensure that the course appears like an oasis in the middle of a desert. It has a goodvariety of other facilities including a range, practise green, golf shop, tennis courts, and good restaurant.

Both of the Almerimar beaches are maintained to a good standard and cleared regularly. Various visitor amenities are on hand including fresh water showers, lifeguards and toilets plus during the high season they are used for local sporting events like football and volleyball competitions.

Just over 4 miles inland is the busy little town of El Ejido, popular for its weekly street market, that has become increasingly prosperousin recent times due to the thriving local agricultural economy. A popular, although rather strange local attraction is the "Plastic fantastic" tour, which takes in nearby greenhouses and a fruit and vegetable sale.

In between El Ejido and Almerimar is a big shopping centre thatincludes a supermarket, multi screen cinema, fast food outlets and a good selection of other retail shops. There is a coach service between El Ejido and Almerimar which halts at the shopping complex.

Further to the east of Almerimar is the large Punta Entinas Sabinar natural park, made up of dunes, beaches and marsh. The park boasts over 150 different types of bird like the flamingo, the heron, the cormorant plus redshanks and the best time to visit is mid autumn when many migratory birds stop off there.
