If you are considering renting property in the Chelmsford town centre then these are the main locations I would recommend home hunting in:

A. Moulsham Street
B. The Hub, Bond Street
C. Above Fitness First, Brook Street Flats
D. In Townfield Street or Victoria Crescent, behind the station

Prices vary from about 700 per month to 1350 pcm whether it comes furnished or unfurnished this does not appear to effect the price a much.

The Moulsham Street area has loads of small two up two down terraces, some with original features and small yards or gardens. The downside is that these homes tend not to be decorated to a good standard. The upside is that Moulsham Street has plenty of shops, restaurants and bars. You can pop out to the bakers and newsagents in the morning to grab your croissant and a newspaper. The downside is Moulsham Street can be noisy once the pubs shut and it seems that if there is a punch up in Chelmsford it will inevitably take place in Moulsham Street.

The Hub is "the" place to rent at the present, as it is located on the canal front behind the high street, just opposite Tesco, near to the train station and above the fine restaurants the Loch Fyne and Prezzo. It is also the only location in Chelmsford that you can rent a Penthouse apartment. It is a brand new construction with modern decoration of laminate floors, stainless steel work tops plus your own balcony. The downside is that you will pay a small fortune to live there, and it is without character.

The Brook Street flats are another local favourite, the building appears like a converted warehouse with large windows. You can obtain good deals renting a small flat there as it is above the busy Fitness First gym, near to the New Street Restaurant, up the road from the station and Chelmsford town centre. Another benefit of living there is that there is very little noise, but the downside is that you have to compete for car parking with the members of the gym.

Just behind the Station there are a few roads (Townfield Street, and Victoria Crescent) with old mill terraces, most of which are rentals as opposed to owner occupiers. If you are a commuter to the City of London every day these would be my first choice. The interior of these rentals vary greatly in terms of decoration, character, but for the cost of a flat here you get a small house plus a garden or yard.
